As many had expected, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 stormed the US box office, taking $35 million in its first weekend, ahead of the $30 million the first film took in 2009, although behind last year’s Hotel Transylvania (also from Sony Animation), which took a September record $42 million.
While it’s been doing well in the rest of the world, Rush’s expansion from five to nearly 3,000 screens only brought in $10.5 million. It could have been worse, but even with great reviews it still couldn’t overcome the fact Formula 1 isn’t as popular in the US as it is in the rest of the world.
Baggage Claim came in at number four with $9.3 million, about in line with several other recent comedy with a largely African-American cast.
The only other new entry was Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut, Don Jon, which took $9 million. It’s not a bad start and suggests the actor may become a pretty bankable director in the future.
