Several years ago now in the wake of the success of Mamma Mia, Universal put a movie version of the hit musical Wicked into development. However Disney moving forward on Oz The Great And Powerful seemed to take the wind out of the project’s sails.
It’s not completely dead though, as the show’s composer Stephen Schwartz has told Vulture that, “We’re starting to do some work on it. We’ve actually started gearing up on it a little bit. I don’t know exactly how many years away it is.”
When asks if there will be alterations for the big screen, he adds, “What are we going to change? What are we going to keep? How do you use a whole new language and medium to tell the story? [We can] really look at it again and say, ‘Oh, we can do this, and we’ve always wanted to do that and we couldn’t onstage, but we can in a movie.’ We’re actually having a blast.”
In the early days of development, the likes of J.J. Abrams, James Mangold, Rob Marshall and Glee creator Ryan Murphy were all said to be in contention to direct, but it’s not known if anyone is at the helm at the moment.
Let’s hope it doesn’t take them too much longer as we’d love to see Ephalba defying gravity in the cinema.
