The 1996 movie The Craft wasn’t a huge hit on its cinema release, but since then it’s had a cult following on video and then DVD, with many responding to its story of four teenage girls who start to experiment with witchcraft.
There have been rumours of a remake before, but not its been given real momentum, as Leigh Janiak has come onboard to direct the film. She recently made her debut with the creepy Honeymoon.
The original follows Robin Tunney’s teenager, who has supernatural gifts. She teams up with Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell, and Rachel True and they begin to do witchcraft together, however as they increasingly use their powers for personal gain the magic begins having undesirable effects, particularly on Fairuza Balk’s character.
Although there are bound to be some who adore the original so much they think it shouldn’t be touched, but the truth is its the sort of film that well worth having another stab at for a new generation, who may well respond to its themes if they’re given less of a 90s vibe.
